Nowadays we rely on a well functioning, machine-like, social system. Unfortunately as we use this “machine” we become part of it. Technology helps us—but we increasingly end up serving it. We permit more regulation in return for more security. The price of such security is limitation.

It is particularly difficult for children at school, for people in jobs, for students in their choice of subjects and for old people and the ill to live in any way than subservient to pre-determined patterns of support. Essentially, we now live in a society that is dominated by categories and rules formed by a technologically based idea of what is “good”.

My exhibition ‘Liberty / Freedom’ consists of 50 paintings of quotations about freedom in four languages by important philosophers, politicians and poets. They show the struggle for freedom, both in the past and in the present, in the geographical and cultural contexts they arose within.

The work is also informed by people I know personally who contributed their own words and thoughts about freedom as they experience it today.

My overall sense is that freedom is getting lost in the seductions of our current fast style of living. But freedom has to be defended because it is the basis for everything human.

Digital face and eye scans, fingerprints and DNA profiles will soon be embedded in identity cards and passports. In Switzerland, on May 17th this year, a referendum will give people the chance to vote against these uses of biometric data.

In her latest paintings Angela Weyersberg investigates the theme of "modern identity." In a graphic work consisting of hand-coloured dry point prints, she shows the beauty and achievement of modern identification systems, as well as the felt unease at the use of biometric data.

At the Vernissage (opening) and Finissage (closing) the artist will present the original dry point prints in a performance. The month long exhibition is of large and striking digitally enhanced prints of faces. The work was initiated in England, print work was conducted in Ravenna, Italy where the first performance took place.

PRESS RELEASE
Christmas 'tree' tells tales at the Gallery

Baubles and tinsel will be nowhere to be found on the alternative Christmas tree at Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Victoria Art Gallery.

The annual tradition of featuring an unconventional take on a Christmas tree continues this year, with a creative design by Bath-based artist, Angela Weyersberg.

Commissioned by the Friends of the Victoria Art Gallery, artists are given the brief to dream up an unusual tree design. Previous years have seen "trees" made from cardboard boxes, wooden pallets, picture frames and even cookies.

Visitors to the Gallery this year will be able to see Angela’s work of art in the foyer of the gallery from Tuesday, 28 November. The German-born artist has painted stories onto blocks of wood which will be arranged to create her “tree”. Angela, who has held 23 exhibitions of her work across Europe, explained that she selects the wood from logs that she collects to burn on her fire at home. She said:

“These logs fuel my imagination. On each of them I paint a ‘world’. I started with architectural scenes—tall buildings, houses in landscapes. And then I began to paint fairy tales, like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, as well as less well known but equally magical tales. I notice that both adults and children relate immediately to the story blocks. Like me, they like to immerse themselves in the stories and dramas which are somehow already there in the wood and which painting helps to bring out.”

An exhibition of Angela’s work, a series of Annunciation paintings, has recently been held at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution. She works from Hodshill Studios, Southstoke.

Jon Benington, Manager of the Victoria Art Gallery, said: “Our alternative Christmas trees have proved to be very popular with visitors in recent years. They’re a real talking point and we are very grateful to the Friends for making this possible. Angela’s Christmas ‘tree’ is unconventional but I think it captures the traditional spirit of the festive period. Every picture tells a story, but our ‘tree’ has many tales to tell.”

Entrance to the Victoria Art Gallery and the exhibitions is free. Opening times are Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 5.00pm, Saturday 10am to 5pm, Sunday 1.30pm to 5pm. The gallery is closed on Monday

by Angela Weyersberg

When I have a question I paint a picture to find an answer. In painting The Annunciation I first asked myself: What is this feeling of isolation that so many people talk about? After all, we spend a lot of time communicating on the phone and at the computer. So then I asked myself: What, actually, is “communication?” Part of the answer lay in looking at how old and modern masters painted Annunciations. My own paintings on the subject build on their work, but also express something new about communication in the present situation.
